The building where Gojira performed at the Paris 2024 Olympics Opening Ceremony was the Conciergerie, a palace on the banks of the Seine River. The performance took place on the evening of July 26.
Gojira is a French heavy metal band consisting of Joe Duplantier, Mario Duplantier, Christian Andreu, and Jean-Michel Labadie. For this intense performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics, they created a version of the emblematic song of the French Revolution, “Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça ira!)” alongside opera singer Marina Viotti.
The musicians played live from the windows of the historic Conciergerie, one of the oldest buildings that was part of the Palais de la Cité in the Middle Ages and was turned into a prison at the end of the 14th century.
During the French Revolution, this palace’s most famous prisoner was Marie Antoinette, who was beheaded. Therefore, throughout Gojira’s performance, there were also headless women dressed in red in the windows.
Today, the Conciergerie is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is open to the public. To visit the Conciergerie, it is recommended to buy tickets in advance.
This was the first time in history that a heavy metal band performed at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.
