Renton is a neighboring city to Seattle, about 20 kilometers to the south. It’s here, at Greenwood Memorial Park, that Jimi Hendrix is laid to rest in a large memorial.
Hendrix died in London on September 18, 1970, at the age of 27. His body was returned to Seattle and buried in a simple family grave—reflecting the financial reality that shaped much of his life and that of his relatives for many years. The fame he achieved did not immediately translate into prosperity for those closest to him.
Even so, fans never stopped coming. From different parts of the world, they visited the modest grave to pay tribute, often leaving something behind—a flower, a guitar pick, a letter, a record.
Hendrix’s father, Al Hendrix, witnessed this constant flow of visitors and understood its meaning. Over time, he developed a wish: to create a memorial worthy of his son and of the devotion shown by those who came to honor him.
In 2002, that wish became reality. A new memorial was built within the same cemetery, and Hendrix’s remains were transferred to this space. The result is unlike a conventional grave: it features a sculpted guitar, a reproduction of his signature, and panels that shape the environment with his visual presence. It is a memorial created by and for those who loved Jimi Hendrix—his family, friends, and the fans who, decades after his death, continue to recognize his impact on music worldwide.
It’s worth remembering that the memorial is a shared space, cared for by those who visit and those who maintain it. Paying tribute here also means helping preserve the place itself.
