Berwick Street: The Location of Oasis’ “(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?” Album Cover
Important to know
- Address: Berwick Street (next to Sister Ray Records), London, England
- Getting here: Tottenham Court Road Underground Station (500 m)
The cover of Oasis’ 1995 album “(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?” was photographed on Berwick Street, nestled between the record stores Sister Ray and Reckless Records, in the Soho district of London. This location has since become an iconic spot in British pop culture.
After days of wandering through London, art director Brian Cannon and photographer Michael Spencer Jones selected Berwick Street for its visual appeal. They were specifically looking for a street flanked by buildings that created a strong perspective and vanishing point.
In the early hours of a Sunday morning, they were surprised to find Berwick Street empty, with no parked cars, despite the typical flow of fruit and vegetable trucks setting up for the market. This rare opportunity allowed them to capture the now-famous shot.
The cover image features two blurred figures walking in opposite directions, which could be interpreted as Liam and Noel Gallagher, although they did not participate in the photoshoot. This visual suggests a concept frequently mentioned by Noel Gallagher: life is full of questions but has few answers.
The choice of the street for the album cover was also meant to convey the urban atmosphere of the album. Although the area is known for its record shops, this fact did not directly influence the selection of the location. The album’s success has turned Berwick Street into a pilgrimage site for Oasis fans, drawing a parallel to the Beatles’ Abbey Road.
Berwick Street remains a vibrant area, reflecting the enduring influence of Oasis and the cultural significance of the album cover.
