Penny Lane is a street in Liverpool, England, that inspired The Beatles to create one of the British band’s most famous songs.
Released in 1967, the song was written by Paul McCartney – credited to the Lennon-McCartney partnership—and references places and characters such as the nurse, the banker, the fireman, and the barber, which McCartney remembered from his time frequenting the street and its surroundings.
John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison often passed by Penny Lane on the bus when they were students.
The street that inspired The Beatles is located in the suburb of Mossley Hill, in the southern part of Liverpool. The famous “Beatles Magical Mystery Tour” bus tour passes by Penny Lane, as well as other significant landmarks in The Beatles’ history.
Penny Lane is approximately 800 meters long, stretching between Mossley Hill Road and the A562. While it is mostly residential, the section near the A562 and Elm Hall Drive has some commercial establishments.
