Zitadelle Spandau is a historic medieval fortress in Berlin, Germany, now transformed into a stunning venue for concerts and a major tourist attraction. Since 2005, it has been home to the Citadel Music Festival, one of the city’s most remarkable open-air music events.
Construction of the citadel began in 1557 and was completed in 1594. Over the centuries, it served many purposes, but after the end of World War II, the site was repurposed exclusively for civilian use. Today, Zitadelle Spandau stands as a unique island of culture and history within Berlin. When there are no events taking place, visitors can explore the fortress as a historical site.
The Citadel Music Festival takes place annually in the German capital, with open-air concerts running from May through September. The venue can host around 10,000 people, providing an unforgettable live music experience.
Throughout its history, the festival has featured legendary rock and metal acts such as Queens of the Stone Age, Avenged Sevenfold, Patti Smith, The Smashing Pumpkins, The Black Keys, Nine Inch Nails, Iggy Pop, Chuck Berry, Alanis Morissette, Korn, NOFX, and Dropkick Murphys.
For security reasons, the festival allows only small bags no larger than A4 size (29.7 cm tall x 21 cm wide). This policy is now common across many European concert venues.
During the Citadel Music Festival, several bars operate on-site, serving snacks as well as alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.
Zitadelle Spandau is easily accessible by public transport (subway and bus).
