Irish Rock: Fontaines D.C.

Fontaines D.C. are the defining Irish rock phenomenon of the 2020s. The Dublin quintet’s blend of 1980s post-punk influences, sharp melodicism and raw authenticity has propelled them to headline slots at international festivals and sold-out shows at major arenas and venues across Europe.

Thin Lizzy are one of Ireland’s most important bands. Led by vocalist and bassist Phil Lynott (1949–1986), the group revolutionised the hard rock scene in the 1970s and 1980s with their energy, melody and iconic twin guitar attack. Jailbreak (1976) was the album that changed everything for the band, breaking through to major international success — particularly in the United States.

Florence Road are an Irish indie rock band formed by childhood friends Lily Aron (vocals and guitar), Emma Brandon (guitar), Ailbhe Barry (bass) and Hannah Kelly (drums). In a short space of time, their melodies, heartfelt ballads and the warmth of Lily Aron’s voice have won fans well beyond Ireland. The band have already toured with Wolf Alice, Olivia Rodrigo and The Last Dinner Party.

Inhaler are a Dublin band led by vocalist and guitarist Elijah Hewson — son of Bono. Irish Rock: Rory Gallagher

Rory Gallagher (1948–1995) is one of Ireland’s greatest guitarists, and his visceral, virtuosic style remains a touchstone for major names in rock and blues to this day. He first made his mark in the late 1960s with the band Taste, before embarking on a solo career in the following decade that produced 11 studio albums.

Irish Rock: The Cranberries

The Cranberries were one of Ireland’s most successful rock bands of the 1990s, particularly in the second half of the decade. The distinctive voice and stage presence of vocalist Dolores O’Riordan (1971–2018) was always the emotional centre of the band. The Limerick group released eight studio albums over the course of their career.
