The Strawberry Fields Memorial is a garden within the famous Central Park in New York City, USA, dedicated to John Lennon. The name was inspired by the Beatles’ song “Strawberry Fields Forever.”
The English musician was tragically assassinated by a fan on December 8, 1980, as he arrived at his home in the Dakota Building at 1 W 72nd St, very close to the park. At the time of the shooting, Lennon was with his wife, Yoko Ono. The couple had been living in New York since the early 1970s.
The famous “Imagine” mosaic is also part of the Strawberry Fields garden and is one of the most visited and photographed spots by John Lennon fans.
The Strawberry Fields Memorial was inaugurated on October 9, 1985, on what would have been the Beatle’s 45th birthday. Every year, on this date, as well as on the anniversary of his death, fans and visitors pay heartfelt tributes to him here.
The entrance to this space is between W 71st St and W 74th St, directly across from the Dakota Building.
