Phil Lynott Statue (Thin Lizzy)

Important to know

  • Address: Harry St, Dublin, Ireland
  • Getting here: Trinity College, Nassau St. (Opp. Frederick St) bus stop

The statue of Phil Lynott, from Thin Lizzy, is one of Dublin’s most beloved monuments.

Unveiled in 2005 by his mother, Philomena, it stands proudly on Harry Street, right outside the iconic Bruxelles Rock Pub, one of Phil’s favorite spots.

Sculpted by Paul Daly, the statue was commissioned by the Roisin Dubh Trust to honor Lynott’s life and legacy.

The sculpture perfectly captures the rebellious and charismatic spirit of the Thin Lizzy frontman, one of Ireland’s most famous rock icons. Beyond his musical contributions, Phil was also a poet, having published two books of poetry in the late 70s.

Although born in England, Phil Lynott grew up in Dublin and is regarded as one of the city’s greatest musical legends. His statue is a popular meeting spot for tourists and rock fans, who often stop to take photos and pay tribute to this music legend, sometimes leaving flowers in his honor.

Often referred to as the Thin Lizzy statue, this monument also reflects Lynott’s strong ties to Dublin’s culture, as he was known to wander Grafton Street and chat with the local flower sellers.

Despite some unfortunate incidents over the years, including vandalism and accidents, the statue remains a powerful reminder of Phil Lynott’s immortal legacy and the lasting impact of his music.

For those who admire Phil Lynott and want to learn more about the Thin Lizzy frontman in Dublin, you can also visit the special room dedicated to him at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Museum and explore the key locations featured in the “Old Town” music video.

Who was Phil Lynott?

Phil Lynott

Philip Parris Lynott was born on August 20, 1949, in West Bromwich, near Birmingham, England. The son of Philomena Lynott and Cecil Parris, Phil spent his early childhood in Moss Side, Manchester, before moving to Dublin, where he was raised by his grandparents.

It was in his teenage years in Dublin that Lynott began his musical career, becoming the lead singer of The Black Eagles, alongside his friend Brian Downey. Later, Phil formed Thin Lizzy, one of Ireland’s most influential rock bands, known for hits such as “The Boys Are Back in Town” and “Jailbreak.”

Lynott’s unique blend of poetry and rock, combined with Thin Lizzy’s innovative guitar sound, defined his career and cemented his place as one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century.

In addition to his work with Thin Lizzy, Lynott also released two solo albums, Solo in Soho and The Philip Lynott Album.

Phil Lynott passed away on January 4, 1986, but his legacy continues to inspire generations of musicians and fans.

I visited Phil's statue in November 2024. It was a cold and rainy day, but it was still worth stopping by for a few minutes. I was deeply moved by this beautiful tribute to him and Thin Lizzy. The street is very quiet, and the statue is easy to find since it’s located in the heart of Dublin. During my visit, the statue was in great condition. Truly a touching experience!
