In September 1976, 14-year-old Larry Mullen Jr. posted a note on the school’s bulletin board looking for people to form a band. Paul Hewson (Bono), Dave Evans (The Edge), Adam Clayton, and other students responded, initially forming a band called Feedback. They later changed the name to The Hype before finally settling on U2.
The band’s first practice sessions took place in the school’s music room in 1976. U2 began rehearsing regularly, preparing for their first performance, which would be at a school talent competition.
According to U2Songs.com, the event was held in the school gym, where the band played on a makeshift stage made of tables, performing covers of artists like Peter Frampton and Bay City Rollers. Their performance was a success, motivating the group to pursue music further.
Mount Temple Comprehensive School was, therefore, the starting point for U2, and the location holds special significance in the band’s history, as they would go on to become one of the biggest rock bands in the world.
